Lynn Pinder’s Testimony/Statement of Faith

Almost three months ago, I sought shelter at a 30-day, temporary Christian shelter in Baltimore for women and children. Fresh out of a relationship with a Christian man and pregnant, I was mentally, spiritually and physically exhausted. At 39, I expected my life to be so different. I mean - I am a Christian, a college graduate, a social entrepreneur, an author, and a small business owner. I have traveled the world, launched organizations, helped make a difference in my community and accepted the call of discipleship on my life. How did I end up in this dark place? Why, Lord, am I in this dark season?

I could stick my head in the sand, wallow in self-pity and put all the blame on the baby’s father for rejecting me and the little life God blessed me to carry or I could place the blame on insensitive family members who I often felt were never available when I needed them most or I could even pass the blame onto “the system” for not working on my behalf. Yet, I know deep in my heart that I am where I am because of the decisions I made in my life. I accept the fact that although I love the Lord with all my heart, I did not trust in Him as I should have nor did I walk in full obedience to His Word. There are consequences for my actions and my inaction.

Four months ago, I made the decision to move back to Baltimore, MD from Savannah, GA to provide support to one of my sisters whose husband was seriously ill and to be in close vicinity to a man I thought I was going to marry. That decision humbled me especially after realizing that neither one of them wanted or needed me the way I thought. Through it all, I was forced to accept and learn some difficult and tough life lessons. I was forced to acknowledge and accept my own shortcomings as well as those who I choose to love. Things have definitely not turned out the way I planned. However, I can say that things have turned out the way God planned.

Through the ups and downs, through the misunderstandings, through the disappointments, through the anger, through the embarrassment, through the shame, through the miscarriage, through the depression, through the back pain, through the frustrations...through it all, I have learned to trust – I mean really trust – in God. I have learned to shine even in the face of adversity. I have learned to love even when I feel unloved. I have learned to accept people where they are, but most importantly I have learned to accept me for who I am – realizing that no matter what state or condition I am in that God will use me if I let Him.

My testimony that I would like to share with you is that God is a provider. No matter what you are going through. No matter what you have done. No matter what you didn’t do. No matter what! If you accept Jesus Christ as your personal savior and confess that HE is Lord over your life, HE will provide. The question is how much do you trust Him.

Do you trust Him just a little or a whole lot? Do you trust Him as long as you are in control? Do you trust Him as long as you can figure out a solution to your problems? Do trust Him as long as there is money in the bank? Do you trust Him as long as your relationships are fruitful? Do you trust Him as long as your book is selling? Do you trust Him for as long as you have a job or a viable business? Do you trust Him only for as long as you can maintain the front?

Can you trust God in blind faith? Can you trust Him even though you lost the house? Can you trust Him even when the job doesn’t come through? Can you trust Him in the sorrow of an untimely death? Can you trust Him when it looks like all hope is gone? Can you trust Him when it seems everything is going wrong in your life? Can you trust Him in the dark seasons?

The experiences I encountered in this dark season of my life helped me to realize that I was guilty of trusting God to the point of when I thought I needed to step in and take action to do things my way. This dark season was my breaking point. This year has become a life-changing year for me. A year where I learned how to trust God fully and rest in Him. It is a year where I learned to surrender fully to God. It is a year where I learned that my actions, my life, and all my decisions must be predicated on God's Word (The Holy Bible) – and His Word must be an active and daily part of my life and work – not just a book I hold in high esteem, but a strategic plan that guides my every thought, action and deed.

This year, I have come full circle in my walk as a woman of God. I may not have everything I want. However, I certainly have everything I need. I am blessed to live in a country where social services are available to provide emergency shelter, money for food, free cell phones, transportation and free Internet usage. I am blessed to live in a city where programs like the Karis Home, My Sister’s Place, People on the Move, and the Baltimore Center for Pregnancy Concerns exist to offer hands-on support to people, like me, who need and want help.

I am blessed to have people like Jacinda, Lela, Robert, Kim, Cathy, the authors from CAOT, Melissa, Chaplin Smith, Elizabeth, Shantress, Denise, Chanel, “Grandma” a.k.a. Vanessa, “Ms. Pat,” “Ms. Toni,” “Ms. Shirley,” “Ms. Che,” “Ms. Debra,” Tanya, Qeyana, members of Calvary Baptist Church/Dundalk, Robin, Janel, Morning, Kevin, Alex, the staff of The Power Magazine, “Mrs. A.J.” and a host of other people (including relatives, friends and complete strangers) in my life who prayed me through and whose direct actions during my time of need demonstrated God's love - helping to nurture and heal my broken spirit back to wholeness. I also thank God for those friends and churches in Savannah whose love, hospitality, teaching and nurturing strengthened me for almost two years prior to my journey back home to Baltimore. I even thank God for those people in my life who I felt fell short of my expectations of them, and I thank God for revealing to me how I fell short of their expectations. I bless God for wisdom, revelation, favor, grace and growth.

I have to admit I prayed earnestly regarding the decision to share this testimony publicly. I struggled with how it would be received, and I obtained confirmation after attending a Bible study at my home church (Restoring Life International Church). I was reminded by my pastor during the study of how important it is for the saints of God to be real. As someone who is sometimes in the public light, I understand that people see me or a situation and base their perception on what their limited eyes allow them to see. To them, seeing is believing. In my season of darkness, God taught me that believing is seeing. He reminded me that mustard seed faith is all that is needed to turn any situation around. Yet, great faith – having the ability to walk or stand in blind belief in God - has the power to transform lives and communities.

Can you imagine living your life daily with a blind belief in God – trusting that He will provide and make a way in every situation? What is so remarkable is that God is so gracious and merciful that He will love us even when we doubt, waiver or fall short in our walk with Him. The Bible provides example after example of God’s faithfulness to believers. As a believer, I am as my pastor taught in Bible study a living testimony – living proof – of God’s love. I am living proof of His faithfulness. But it doesn't stop there; the buck doesn't stop with me. Hallelujah! You, too, are a living testimony - living proof - of God's love. You are living proof of His faithfulness.

If you are experiencing a season of darkness in your life, it might be difficult for you to see beyond the pain and to accept God's love. It may take time for you to learn that even now, you are precious to God. Even now, you have a destiny and a purpose. Even now, there is hope. Take hold of that revelation and cling to God. Seek out His face. Trust in Him. Don't give up! P.U.S.H (Pray Until Something Happens) and if nothing happens - change your prayer, but keep praying. Keep trusting in God. Keep reading His Word.

The Word of God encourages us to work out our faith in fear and trembling. This is a ready reminder that life will produce those moments where terror, dissention, fear and contrite spirits wreck havoc in our lives. Yet, God's indwelling spirit inside of us makes it possible for each of us to be steadfast and grounded in the promises of His Word. Life might knock us down, but it won't take us out if we use the Holy Bible as our sword and compass.

You are looking out for my best interest and I know you have a perfect job fit for me. If this is that perfect fit, then make it perfectly clear to me and to those who are making the hiring decision. Begin now to prepare the time and place where we will meet. Set the tone in the room. I know that first impressions matter a great deal, so help me to be the natural “me” that you have created, so that they can see through my nervousness and anxiety to the person you have created me to be. Content Whatever the Circumstances

I'm glad in God, far happier than you would ever guess—happy that you're again showing such strong concern for me. Not that you ever quit praying and thinking about me. You just had no chance to show it. Actually, I don't have a sense of needing anything personally. I've learned by now to be quite content whatever my circumstances. I'm just as happy with little as with much, with much as with little. I've found the recipe for being happy whether full or hungry, hands full or hands empty. Whatever I have, wherever I am, I can make it through anything in the One who makes me who I am. I don't mean that your help didn't mean a lot to me—it did. It was a beautiful thing that you came alongside me in my troubles.

You Philippians well know, and you can be sure I'll never forget it, that when I first left Macedonia province, venturing out with the Message, not one church helped out in the give-and-take of this work except you. You were the only one. Even while I was in Thessalonica, you helped out—and not only once, but twice. Not that I'm looking for handouts, but I do want you to experience the blessing that issues from generosity.

And now I have it all—and keep getting more! The gifts you sent with Epaphroditus were more than enough, like a sweet-smelling sacrifice roasting on the altar, filling the air with fragrance, pleasing God no end. You can be sure that God will take care of everything you need, his generosity exceeding even yours in the glory that pours from Jesus. Our God and Father abounds in glory that just pours out into eternity. Yes."

Psalm 46:10 'Be still and know that I am God.' So many times we make situations more than they are due to our anxiety, CALM DOWN !

God has your life under control; he knows how to handle even the seemingly complex situation with ease. SHUT UP ! Stop having pity parties and talking about your business all the time; don't you know that the power of death and life is in the tongue! Stop speaking negative things into existence in your life and in others. QUIT TRIPPIN' ! When you look at your situations through your eyes, you often read more into the situation than what is there. It's not as bad as you think particularly if God is in your life; Stop over analyzing your life. Be courageous!

2 Timothy 1:7 - 'For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of Love, and of a sound mind. Fear is not of God. Have the courage to step out on faith and do the seemingly impossible. Start your own business; go into the ministry; apply for that promotion; anything that you've been afraid to do and you know that God has called you to do - JUST DO IT! Have confidence!

Philippians 4:13 - 'I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.' Remember, greater is He that's within you than he that's in the world. You have the power of the most High God working in you, and you have His Son steadily making intercession for you. You have nothing to worry about! Walk with your head up! You say you have low self-esteem; somebody told you that you'd never amount to anything; the devil is a liar! Know that you are somebody not because Jesus said it, but because you are a child of The King! Walk in the VICTORY!

Romans 8:28 - 'And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose.' Does anything else need to be said? The jury has been out and the verdict is in - YOU WIN! In your finances - YOU WIN! On your job - YOU WIN! In your relationships (married, single, divorced, family, friends) -YOU WIN!! In your health - YOU WIN! God has already worked it out for you. It may not come the way you think it should come (or when you think it should), but remember - CALM DOWN, SHUT UP, AND QUIT TRIPPIN! He's working it out for 'YOUR' good (in His time). Do not ask the Lord to guide your footsteps, if you are not willing to move your feet. Be Blessed TODAY !!

RECIPROCATE PLEASE! God determines who walks into your life, it's up to you to decide who you let walk away, who you let stay, and who you refuse to let go. I need this back. If you'll do this for me, I'll do it for you. When there is nothing left but God, that is when you find out that God is all you need. Father, bless all my friends in whatever it is that You know they may need this day! And may their life be full of your peace, prosperity and power as he/she seeks to have a closer relationship with You.

An Open Letter to President Barack Obama

Nov. 5, 2008

Dear Brother Obama,

You have no idea, really, of how profound this moment is for us.

Us being the black people of the Southern United States.

You think you know, because you are thoughtful, and you have studied our history. But seeing you deliver the torch so many others before you carried, year after year, decade after decade, century after century, only to be struck down before igniting the flame of justice and of law, is almost more than the heart can bear. And yet, this observation is not intended to burden you, for you are of a different time, and, indeed, because of all the relay runners before you, North America is a different place. It is really only to say: Well done. We knew, through all the generations, that you were with us, in us, the best of the spirit of Africa and of the Americas. Knowing this, that you would actually appear, someday, was part of our strength. Seeing you take your rightful place, based solely on your wisdom, stamina and character, is a balm for the weary warriors of hope, previously only sung about.

I would advise you to remember that you did not create the disaster that the world is experiencing, and you alone are not responsible for bringing the world back to balance. A primary responsibility that you do have, however, is to cultivate happiness in your own life. To make a schedule that permits sufficient time of rest and play with your gorgeous wife and lovely daughters. And so on. One gathers that your family is large. We are used to seeing men in the White House soon become juiceless and as white-haired as the building; we notice their wives and children looking strained and stressed. They soon have smiles so lacking in joy that they remind us of scissors. This is no way to lead. Nor does your family deserve this fate.

One way of thinking about all this is: It is so bad now that there is no excuse not to relax. From your happy, relaxed state, you can model real success, which is all that so many people in the world really want. They may buy endless cars and houses and furs and gobble up all the attention and space they can manage, or barely manage, but this is because it is not yet clear to them that success is truly an inside job. That it is within the reach of almost everyone.I would further advise you not to take on other people's enemies. Most damage that others do to us is out of fear, humiliation and pain. Those feelings occur in all of us, not just in those of us who profess a certain religious or racial devotion. We must learn actually not to have enemies, but only confused adversaries who are ourselves in disguise. It is understood by all that you are commander in chief of the United States and are sworn to protect our beloved country; this we understand, completely. However, as my mother used to say, quoting a Bible with which I often fought, "hate the sin, but love the sinner." There must be no more crushing of whole communities, no more torture, no more dehumanizing as a means of ruling a people's spirit. This has already happened to people of color, poor people, women, children. We see where this leads, where it has led.

A good model of how to "work with the enemy" internally is presented by the Dalai Lama, in his endless caretaking of his soul as he confronts the Chinese government that invaded Tibet. Because, finally, it is the soul that must be preserved, if one is to remain a credible leader. All else might be lost; but when the soul dies, the connection to earth, to peoples, to animals, to rivers, to mountain ranges, purple and majestic, also dies. And your smile, with which we watch you do gracious battle with unjust characterizations, distortions and lies, is that expression of healthy self-worth, spirit and soul, that, kept happy and free and relaxed, can find an answering smile in all of us, lighting our way, and brightening the world.We are the ones we have been waiting for.

A Night at the Movies - Cadillac Records

I spoke to two friends of mine and each of them encouraged me to see the movie, Cadiallac Records. Both of them spoke highly of the actors, the acting, and the story. I treated myself last night to a movie after vending at the mall. It was a hard choice. Me, being the movie buff I am had a difficult time choosing which movie to see - Beyonce's Cadillac Records, Will Smith's Seven Pounds, or Will Smith's son's The Day the Earth Stood Still. In the end, I chose Cadillac Records. I figured it had been out the longest and this might be my last opportunity to see it on the big screen.

I must admit the actors, the acting, and writing were exquisette. Cadillac Records was just as good as my friends said it would be minus some of the nudity. Yet, I wasn't prepared for the sadness I felt after watching the stirring performances by Columbus Short, Gabrielle Union, Beyonce Knowles, and Jeffrey Wright. As I left the movie, I was overcome with a heaviness that hit me like a ton of bricks. I literally had to fight back tears on my ride home and was a little perplexed as to why the movie put me into such a serious funk of depression. Then, my Christian mind kicked in and I realized that all of the characters in the movie struggled with their own personal demons - drugs, sex, infidelity, anger, alcohol, hate, and rejection - wandering lost without any hope or any understanding of the love of Christ. I was reminded of how at times in my life I, too, was reckless and living without hope. I realized that I, too, had once felt the similar hurt, longing, and rejection. The only difference is that I have now surrended my life to Christ who continues to wash away all of the pain, the hurt, and the longing. I can only hope that the actors who played the parts and the real individuals whose lives are portrayed in Cadillac Records who are still living find peace of mind and solace in God. I pray that Ms. Etta James walks into her healing in Christ and that she is healthy, wealthy, and healed. I also pray that viewers gleam the other messages of self-determination and economic independence in the movie that the character Howlin Wolf represents.

In the end, I think Cadillac Records is an adult movie - worth seeing. It could serve as a dynamic ministry tool for those of us who see what the darkness in the movie truly represents and who have the calling to share God's light.

A Prayer for Christian Entrepreneurs

Father God,
You are so awesome and great.
Lord, I thank you for your Holy Spirit, your love, and your grace.
I come before you today asking for covering and protection as a Christian entrepreneur.
Lord, help me make wise decisions.
Help me to walk in discipline and diligence.Guide my hands, my mind, and my actions so that I act responsibly professionally and personally.
Give me a gentle and honest spirit that draws people for your glory.Help me to be hospitable and just.
Never let me forget that my businesses stand as a testimony of your mercy and power.
Lord, you are my rock and fortress.
I take your shield of faith and I quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
I stand on your Word and your promise.
I will study to be quiet and to do my own businesses and to work with my own hands as you commanded.
I will walk honestly toward them that are without and I will lack nothing.
I will receive your mercy, God, and faint not.
I will renounce dishonest business practices.
I will not walk in craftiness nor will I handle the word of God deceitfully but by manifestation of the truth commending myself to every man's conscience in the sight of God.

In all I do, I will make the voice of Thanksgiving heard and tell of all your wondrous works.

Lord God, I ask that like your servant Abraham you bless my children and my children's children.

I Voted Today!

I voted today.
I stood in line.
I wasn't the only one.

I almost bought into the lie
that the people in my community didn't care...
that they were unconcerned...
apathetic.

But as I stood in line today,
my heart beamed with pride
as I looked around and saw so many people
young and old,
some with children,
others with friends and family members -
all in line, like me, to make history.

I heard the influx of complaints from people about the long lines.
I heard the worried cries of those concerned about being late for work, and
I offered them a warm smile and a gentle reminder
as to why their presence and their vote was so important.

I gave up my space in line to let an elder -
who was there to vote for the first time in years
and who was late for work - cast her ballot before me.

I stood in line and laughed with my neighbors,
encouraged strangers and thanked God
for the presence of mind and spirit
to be part of this day in history.

I stood in line today and I voted
for the first Black man nominated for the U.S. Presidency.
I stood in line today - not alone - but in solidarity with my community.

No cameras...no news reporters to witness this amazing sight
of hundreds of people from my crime-ridden and drug-infested neighborhood
wait patiently to use the privilege that our ancestors
died to make available to us.

I, as I know everyone else who stood in line today,
will cherish this memory in our hearts.
We will be able to tell our children and our children's children
that we made history.

We stood in line today and cast a vote for a brighter America -
a place where hopes and dreams still abound.
A place where people can stand in line and change the course of history.

I stood in line today and my country is a much better place
because of my action and the action of all those who stood in line with me.

Prayers for the Hudson and Pressly Families

Father in the name of Jesus, I come before you today with a heavy heart. I am so thankful for your love and mercy. I am so thankful for your grace. I am so thankful for your Word and Holy Spirit, but my heart is grieving over the vicious attacks again these two families. My heart is grieving for that son, daughter, brother, sister, mother, father, cousin, uncle, grandmother that was snatached away from us.

Lord, I know that you have a plan for every situation and action. Lord God, I ask that your Holy Spirit provide comfort and peace to the Hudson and Pressly Families. Lord, I ask that you be with them in this time of grief and sorrow. I ask, also, that you compel the perpetrators of this crime to come forward. Lord, don't give them peace...make them uncomfortable...make them restless until they take responsibility for their actions and turn themselves in for committing these crimes. Lord, I ask that you soften the heart of those who know the perpetrators. Lord, give them the courage to come forward and speak out against the viscious attacks. Lord, turn what the enemy meant for tragedy into a blessing for these families. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Father God, in the name of Jesus, we come before you today in thanksgiving and praise for all the blessings that you have bestowed in our lives. Lord, we are so thankful for your enduring love, mercy, and grace. Lord, we ask for a special prayer of mercy and protection for the Hudson family. We ask that you extend Your Holy Spirit to be with them - around them and in them - during this time of grief. Lord, we don't always understand the circumstances of life or why bad things happen to good people, but we do know that you are a loving and awesome and good God and we ask that you send your angels to comfort this family. We ask that you soften the hearts of those who perpetuated this violent act against this family and that you compel them to do the right thing, even now. And we ask that even in this tragedy that your will be done. God, let your light and love and goodness shine even in this hour of sorrow for this family. Equip the people closest to the Hudsons to be steadfast in your Word and filled with Your Holy Spirit. Equip the family with individuals with their best interest at heart and with counselors and spokesperson with a mind stayed on you, God. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

If you decide for God, living a life of God-worship, it follows that you don't fuss about what's on the table at mealtimes or whether the clothes in your closet are in fashion. There is far more to your life than the food you put in your stomach, more to your outer appearance than the clothes you hang on your body. Look at the birds, free and unfettered, not tied down to a job description, careless in the care of God. And you count far more to him than birds.

Has anyone by fussing in front of the mirror ever gotten taller by so much as an inch? All this time and money wasted on fashion—do you think it makes that much difference? Instead of looking at the fashions, walk out into the fields and look at the wildflowers. They never primp or shop, but have you ever seen color and design quite like it? The ten best-dressed men and women in the country look shabby alongside them.

If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don't you think he'll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? What I'm trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God's giving. People who don't know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don't worry about missing out. You'll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.

Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don't get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.

The two scriptures popped up for my daily devotions on my two blogs. I smiled to myself as I thought how timely these scriptures were for me right now in my life as I celebrate 37 years of life on this earth. My journey to me has been long and difficult - filled with too many regrets, too much heartache, and too much pain. However, these years have also been filled with many blessings.

I was blessed with the opportunity to gleam from my birth mother, my step mother, my father, my three grandmothers, my two great-aunts, my two grandfathers, my three older sisters who think they are my Momma, my younger sister who thinks she is my Momma, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, and extended family members who over the years have showered me with tons of love and support. I also have a host of friends and mentors - from Baltimore to Savannah to Atlanta to Miami to San Francisco - who over the years have shared their love, insight, and economic support with me. In some cases, they have become like family providing emotional, financial, and sometimes physical assistance when my blood family was unable to do so.

I have traveled across the United States and visited two continents. I have travelled to West Africa and South Africa. I have visited two Native American reservations. I have attended an United Nations sponsored conference. I have worked for some amazing organizations - all (the amazing ones and not so amazing ones) have helped me grow personally and professionally. I have participated in numerous fellowships and leadership programs which have introduced me to some of the most talented, witty, and creative people on this planet. I have launched and run a nonprofit organization which helped me plant positive seeds in the lives of youth. I have launched and run three for-profit businesses. I have written and published a book. I have had the opportunity to help empower adults by equipping them with literacy and leadership skills. I have had the opportunity to serve under pastors who walk in love and integrity. I have had the opportunity to engage in conversations with people from all backgrounds and ethnicities. I have had the opportunity to know and experience true love.

And although I have many deficits that I feel need "fixing," I am here: sane, healthy, secure, and saved. I didn't start this year with all four of these traits and too be honest I just slid into my birthday clinging on to all four. Yet, I am here and I am so thankful for my life!

Miracle at St. Anna - Don't Believe the Critics! This is one of the BEST movies EVER!

I went to the movies today to see the Miracle at St. Anna, and I was blown away by the rich story line and the superb acting. Spike Lee did a phenomenal job telling the story of what it was like for Black men serving in War World II . Don't believe the critics. This is an excellent movie that will have you on the edge of your seat - sometimes laughing, sometimes crying but always thinking about the complex messages that jump out at you from every scene. Spike Lee has really grown as a producer, and this movie is evidence of his creativity and genius.

I hope you take the time in the next week or so to buy a ticket to see this movie. We need more movies like Miracle at St. Anna that tell our story with grace, honor, and dignity. For now, let's support this movie and make it a blockbuster. If you are an educator or a parent, I would encourage you to use the movie as a teachable moment for teens or adults attending ESOL and GED programs. There are some extremely graphic killing scenes and at least one partial sex scene, so you should use good judgment and probably only encourage young people aged 14 or over to see the movie.

Last week, I had the opportunity to attend a book signing by Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi. Among other things, she is the author of Know Your Power: Message to America's Daughters. One thing that struck me during her talk was her constant references to family, God, and community.

House Speaker Pelosi, a native Baltimorean, shared the story behind the catch phrase, "Know your Power." She spoke fondly of former Congresswoman Lindy Boggo who originally told her, "Know thy power and use it!" I grasped the following wisdom pearls from Speaker Pelosi's talk:

"There is a spark of divinity in every person"
"My parents raised me to be holy"
"Public service is a noble cause; we all have a responsibility to help other people"
"You must own the ground"
"You only had a conversation, not a political action"
"We all have an obligation to give a new president cooperation and respect; that is our responsibility as American citizens"
"silent subjects"

Her talk reminded me of a Ghandi quote I keep seeing in and around Baltimore on advertisements by JHU:

"Live like you are going to die tomorrow. Learn like you are going to live forever."

Both challenge me to focus daily on the really important things in life -like living free - and to not get boggled down with self-doubt, indecisiveness, petty arguments, reprehension, and reproach.

I have a former colleague/friend who would always challenge people in his presence to - as he would say - be "intellectual honest" about their intentions and motives. As I encounter people... strangers on the street and get to know the people I work and/or volunteer with I am always intrigued with people's intentions and motives. Like what's up with people who know you and will search you out at an event, but don't come over to speak to you? One of my friends called them "playa haters." She described them as people who want to know what you are into and/or doing but who do not have sincere intentions of supporting you. Hmmm...

What's up with people who volunteer with other people who volunteer for the same cause but feel it necessary to create caste systems or to talk down to people they feel aren't important enough to warrant respect. The other day I witnessed an interchange between a so-called lead volunteer and a general volunteer. I was amazed at the need for this particular volunteer to assert a kind of "lead" status and watched as this volunteer talked down to another woman with more than three decades of community service, leadership, and outreach in the community. Hmmm...

What's up with people who need to define themselves by their economic status? I met someone recently who made a great effort to distinguish her "middle class" self from low-income (class) people who live in the City. When I told her I was from a low-income family and lived in a low-income community, she looked at me and said something to the effect of "that is hard to believe." Why do we spend so much senseless time dividing ourselves? Hmmm...

The other day I was at a festival selling books. I greeted everyone that walked by the table with a, "Hello" and a smile. What's up with people who just give you a blank stare and no response? Do they think a return smile or "Hello" will signal an agreement and/or interest to sell books. Hmmm...

What's up with nonprofit organizations that tell their staff and/or students that it is unlawful to register clients to vote on-site because it is against the law for nonprofits to be involved in politics? I met a really nice lady who told me that this is what management at her organization told her and other employees. Hmmm...

What's up with guys who would rather spend a lifetime being promiscuous in uncommitted relationships rather than take the time to build committed relationships with women of substance? Hmmm...

What's up with a government that frowns upon so-called "welfare states" and "hand-outs" but will create an $800 bail out for big businesses? Why is it that the rules change when wealthy people with problems need help, but when poor people with problems need help it is business as usual? Hmmm...

Over the years, I have found great comfort in the art of writing. As a matter of fact, writing poetry and short stories have become two of my favorite pastimes. Although I hope one day to enjoy the leisure of writing full-time, I currently enjoy no such pleasure. I split my time working as (1) an adult literacy instructor at several Baltimore-based adult education programs; (2) a consultant for several for profit and non-profit organizations; (3) a writer/editor at a new Internet-based printing company; and (4) a volunteer with two nonprofit organizations in the Baltimore metropolitan area. To say the least, I am a woman with many hats. Still, I must confess that I am probably one of a few people on this planet who actually love her work. I enjoy helping people discover and use the gifts that God has given them.

In August 2008, I will have an awesome opportunity to collaborate with A Step Forward, Inc., Soulcial Solutions, Inc., and TAKE ACTION! Publishing to help participants in a local substance abuse recovery program share their life lessons through writing. For 10 weeks, participants in A Step Forward, Inc. will learn a variety of writing skills, including techniques for writing poetry and creative essays. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to submit at least one of their writings for publication in an anthology for A Step Forward, Inc.

I am extremely excited about the Life Lessons Writing Project because it has the potential to not only help people transcend their pain into healing, but it provides a constructive outlet for those in recovery to help others break loose from the chains of substance abuse. This project could benefit greatly from your support; it is in need of the following supply donations:

CALL TO ACTION: We Can't Let Our Young People Starve

Dear Friends,

As I watched the news last night, I was moved by the actions of a group of young people from Baltimore who launched a hunger strike as a last effort to force the City of Baltimore to provide $3 million dollars in support of a youth initiative that would employ older youth in Baltimore to tutor young children. These young warriors – the epitome of youth development - are dynamic, articulate, and engaged in a righteous fight for justice. Their actions and behavior are in direct contrast to another group of older youth who also made the news last night for their viscous attack against a young barbering student last week.

As I sat watching the two stories, the urgency in the demands of the young people participating in the hunger strike pulled my heart strings as did the response of our City leaders. I heard the following comments from our City leaders: “The money has been allocated. We don’t have $3 million dollars. We’re willing to work with the young people if they will compromise.” And I wondered why should our young people have to compromise? These young people are our leaders today. Why can’t we – the adults – figure out a way to invest in them?

Although the City of Baltimore may not have the funds to support another youth initiative, it has access to wealthy business partners who might contribute financial support if they were asked. Corporations, production companies, developers, and investors - like the Ritz-Carlton, Struever Bros. Eccles & Rouse, Inc., the Marriott, Constellation Energy, the producers of the WIRE, and HBO - could easily write-off the expense of another youth initiative in Baltimore without it ever having to be a burden on the City’s “rainy day” budget. If one were to do the math, only 20 corporations, production companies, businesses, developers, foundations, and investors would need to contribute $150,000 to support the youth initiative as proposed by the young people on the hunger strike. A sponsorship of $150,000 by 20 corporations, businesses, developers, and investors could easily turn into a win-win situation and an awesome long-term investment for everyone in this city.

As Baltimore transcends into a city of renaissance, its leaders must think outside the box in terms of supporting a variety of viable initiatives to provide positive youth development for the older youth and children of this City. We need to ask our City leaders to rethink their response to these young people. I hope you will join me in taking the following actions in their support:

Email and/or call City Council members (the email addresses are above/telephone number is 410-396-3100). Ask City Council to find 20 corporations, production companies, businesses, developers, foundations and/or investors doing business in Baltimore to invest $150,000 to support the youth initiative as proposed by the young people of Peer to Peer Youth Enterprises;
Email and/or call the Mayor’s office (the email address is above/telephone number is 410-396-3100). Ask Mayor Dixon to work with the Baltimore Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Business Partnership, other quasi-governmental agencies, and commercial partners to invest $150,000 to support the youth initiative as proposed by the young people of Peer to Peer Youth Enterprises;
Forward this email to at least five other people. Ask family, friends, and colleagues to email and/or call City Hall and to forward this email to at least five other people.
Pray. Pray that we, adults, step up and take more responsibility for taking action to alter the educational and economic realities of the young people in this City.. Pray for the health and safety of our young people. Pray for more economic and educational opportunities for the parents and caregivers of the youth of this City.

We all have a responsibility for enhancing the lives of children and youth in Baltimore. These young people who are participating in this hunger strike have organized and come together with an impressive plan. They deserve to have nourishment for their bodies, minds, and spirits. Let us adults - come together and fulfill our obligation to them.

Growing Pains....

2007 and 2008 have by far been two of the most difficult years for me. Yet, through it all I have probably grown leaps in bounds in my God walk. I have experienced some major professional and personal changes that have pushed me to a place in my faith that I honestly didn't know existed. Through it all, I have to admit that I have learned some amazing things about myself and others. I thought I would share a few with you! Let me know what you think!

I've learned that being a Christian means different things to different people.
I've learned that many Black women in management treat other people badly.
I've learned that many Black women in management suffer from insecurities and control issues that make it impossible for almost anyone, especially other Black women, to walk in their gifts.
I've learned that when hard times hit life still goes on.
I've learned the best way to overcome difficulties is to keep pushing for success, even if it is difficult to see a solution.
I've learned the value of standing up for yourself and speaking out against a wrong situation, even when it seems like you are fighting a Goliath.
I've learned the importance of forgiveness.
I've learned that a "Hello" doesn't hurt anybody and to speak even when people don't speak back.
I've learned that everyone isn't striving for excellence; some people are satisfied with just getting the job done.
I've learned the power of a smile.
I've learned that some people are just petty.
I've learned the power of communication. I've learned how important it is to be able to express your thoughts with confidence and clarity.
I've learned the importance of creativity, flexibility, and integrity.
I've learned that life is full of opportunities to continue learning and growing.
I've learned to cherish play time.
I've learned to cherish my time of worship and prayer.
I've learned to have patience with myself and others.
I've learned that some people may never change.

To My Sisters in the Lord.....

There comes a time in every woman's life when she has to take a close look at herself. Not at her circumstance, not at what she did, not how unfair life is, or at who made you do it. She has to just look at herself...

Have you ever admired a woman who has been through changes in her life? Or have you made up in your mind that she is just messed up? Before you make this mistake, take a closer look. A woman who has endured the most unusual life is someone of wisdom, someone who has been chosen by God to go through things that have made her stronger.

Think of all the great women in the Bible: Mary Magdalene, Ruth and Naomi, the woman with an issue of blood, and Esther, to name a few.

Mary was a prostitute, a very uneasy woman. But by the time Jesus was done with her, she was His closest follower. Esther was unfortunate in marrying an abusive man, but by the time God was done with her, she had married one of the wealthiest men in the land!

Women are so quick to beat the next one down instead of trying to hold her up.

Before you wonder, ' What's up with her?' ask yourself, 'What's up with me?'

That woman could be my mother, sister, aunt, in-law, stepmother, niece, grandmother, great-grandmother, neighbor, friend, or co-worker. That woman could be ME.

Women are the carriers of life, not the channels of death. Let's build and encourage each other, as did Ruth and Naomi. Share this with all the women in your life.

Encourage and love, forgive and forget, and trust that the woman that receives this message will be touched in some way!

A drunken man was in an Oldsmobile they said had run the light that caused the six-car pile up on Highway 109 that night. When broken bodies lay about and blood was everywhere, the sirens screamed out eulogies, for death was in the air.

A mother trapped inside her car was heard above the noise. Her plaintive pleas near split the air, "Oh, God, please spare my boys," she cried! As she fought to loose her pinned hands, she struggled to get free, but mangled metal held her fast in grim captivity. Her frightened eyes then focused on where the back seat once had been, but all she saw was broken glass and two children's seats crushed in. Her twins were nowhere to be seen, she did not hear them cry and then she prayed they'd been thrown free, "Oh, God, don't let them die!

Then firemen came to cut her loose, but when they searched the back they found therein no little boys, but the seat belts were intact. They thought the woman had gone mad and was traveling alone, but when they turned to question her they discovered she was gone.

Policemen saw her running wild and screaming above the noise in beseeching supplication,"Please help me find my boys! They're four years old and wear blue shirts. Their jeans are blue to match." One cop spoke up, "They're in my car, and they don't have a scratch. They said their daddy put them there, and gave them each a cone. Then told them both to wait for Mom to come and take them home. I've searched the area high and low , but I can't find their dad. He must have fled the scene,I guess, and that is very bad."

The mother hugged the twins and said, while wiping at a tear,"He could not flee the scene, you see for he's been dead a year." The cop just looked confused and asked, "Now, how can that be true?" The boys said, "Mommy, Daddy came and left a kiss for you. He told us not to worry and that you would be all right. And then he put us in this car with the pretty, flashing light. We wanted him to stay with us because we miss him so, but Mommy, he just hugged us tight and said he had to go. He said someday we'd understandand and told us not to fuss. And he said to tell you, Mommy, He's watching over us."

The mother knew without a doubt that what they spoke was true. For she recalled their dad's last words, "I will watch over you." The firemen's notes could not explain the twisted, mangled car and how the three of them escaped without a single scar. But on the cop's report was scribed in print so very fine,"An angel walked the beat tonight on Highway 109."

Last fall in Jena, Louisiana, the day after two Black high school students sat beneath the "white tree" on their campus, nooses were hung from the tree. When the superintendent dismissed the nooses as a "prank," more Black students sat under the tree in protest.

The District Attorney then came to the school accompanied by the town's police and demanded that the students end their protest, telling them, "I can be your best friend or your worst enemy... I can take away your lives with a stroke of my pen."1 A series of white-on-black incidents of violence followed, and the DA did nothing. But when a white student was beaten up in a schoolyard fight, the DA responded by charging six black students with attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

It's a story that reads like one from the Jim Crow era, when judges, lawyers and all-white juries used the justice system to keep blacks in "their place"--but it's happening today. The families of these young men are fighting back, but the odds are stacked against them. Together, we can make sure their story is told, that this becomes an issue for the Governor of Louisiana, and that justice is provided for the Jena 6. It starts now. Please add your voice:

The noose-hanging incident and the DA's visit to the school set the stage for everything that followed. Racial tension escalated over the next couple of months, and on November 30, the main academic building of Jena High School was burned down in an unsolved fire. Later the same weekend, a black student was beaten up by white students at a party. The next day, black students at a convenience store were threatened by a young white man with a shotgun. They wrestled the gun from him and ran away. While no charges were filed against the white man, the students were arrested for the theft of the gun.2

That Monday at school, a white student, who had been a vocal supporter of the students who hung the nooses, taunted the black student who was beaten up at the off-campus party and allegedly called several black students "nigger." After lunch, he was knocked down, punched and kicked by black students. He was taken to the hospital but was released and was well enough to go to a social event that evening.3

Six Black Jena High students, Robert Bailey (17), Theo Shaw (17), Carwin Jones (18), Bryant Purvis (17), Mychal Bell (16) and an unidentified minor, were expelled from school, arrested and charged with second-degree attempted murder. Bail was set so high -- between $70,000 and $138,000 -- that the boys were left in prison for months as families went deep into debt to release them.4

The first trial ended last month, and Mychal Bell, who has been in prison since December, was convicted of aggravated battery and conspiracy to commit aggravated battery (both felonies) by an all-white jury in a trial where his public defender called no witnesses. During his trial, Mychal's parents were ordered not to speak to the media and the court prohibited protests from taking place near the courtroom or where the judge could see them.

Mychal is scheduled to be sentenced on July 31st, and could go to jail for 22 years.5

Theo Shaw's trial is next. He will finally make bail this week.

The Jena Six are lucky to have parents and loved ones who are fighting tooth and nail to free them. They have been threatened but they are standing strong. We know that if the families have to go it alone, their sons will be a long time coming home. They will lose precious years to Jena's outrageous attempt to maintain a racist status quo. But if we act now, we can make a difference.

Please add your voice to the voices of these families in Jena, and help bring Mychal, Theo, Robert, Carwin, and Bryant home. By clicking below, you can demand that Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco get involved to make sure that justice is served for Mychal Bell, and that DA Reed Walters drop the charges against the 5 boys who have not yet gone to trial.

Opened and Closed Doors

OPENED AND CLOSED DOORS

We need to learn to thank the Lord for closed doors just as much as we do for open doors.

The reason God closes doors is because He has not prepared anything over there for us.

If he didn't close the wrong door, we would never find our way to the right door.

Even when we don't realize it, God directs our paths through the closing and opening of doors. When one door closes, it forces us to change our course. Another door closes; it forces us to change our course yet again. Then finally, we find the open door and walk right into our blessing. But instead of praising God for the closed door (which kept us out of trouble), we get upset because we 'judge by the appearances.' And in our own arrogance, or ignorance, we insist that we know what is right.

We have a very present help in the time of need who is always standing guard.
Because He walks ahead of us, He can see trouble down the road
and HE sets up road blocks and detours accordingly.
But through our lack of wisdom we try to down the roadblocks
or push aside the detour signs.

Then the minute we get into trouble, we start crying "Lord how could this happen to me?"
We have got to realize that the closed door was a blessing.
Didn't He say that "No good thing will He withhold from them that love Him?"

If you get terminated from your job - don't be down, instead thank God for the new opportunities that will manifest themselves - it might be a better job, or an opportunity to go to school.

If that man or woman won't return your call - it might not be them, it might be the Lord setting up a roadblock (just let it go). One time a person had a bank he had been doing business with for many years tell him "NO" for a $10,000 loan. The Lord led him to call another bank. That bank approved a $40,000 loan for him at a lower interest rate than his own bank had advertised.

I'm so grateful, for the many times God has closed doors to me, just to open them in the most unexpected places.

"The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way." (Psalms 37:23)

The mountain top is glorious, but it is in the Valley that I will grow!

You will have your heart broken probably more than once and it's harder every time. You'll break hearts too, so remember how it felt when yours was broken.

Proverbs 4

Wisdom Is Supreme
Listen, my sons, to a father's instruction; pay attention and gain understanding.
I give you sound learning, so do not forsake my teaching.
When I was a boy in my father's house, still tender, and an only child of my mother,
he taught me and said, "Lay hold of my words with all your heart;
keep my commands and you will live.

Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or swerve from them.
Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you.
Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, [a] get understanding.
Esteem her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will honor you.
She will set a garland of grace on your head and present you with a crown of splendor."

Listen, my son, accept what I say, and the years of your life will be many.
I guide you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths.
When you walk, your steps will not be hampered; when you run, you will not stumble.
Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life.

Do not set foot on the path of the wicked or walk in the way of evil men.
Avoid it, do not travel on it; turn from it and go on your way.
For they cannot sleep till they do evil; they are robbed of slumber till they make someone fall.
They eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence.
The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn,
shining ever brighter till the full light of day.

But the way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know what makes them stumble.
My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words.
Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart;
for they are life to those who find them and health to a man's whole body.
Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.

Put away perversity from your mouth; keep corrupt talk far from your lips.
Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you.
Make level [b] paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm.
Do not swerve to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.

Dear Friends,

Greetings. I would like to once again invite you to join us on our next annual medical mission and cultural trip to Ghana this coming December 2007. Please refer to our web site for details. (www.americaforghana.org)

Departing on Dec. 8th from JFK Airport. Total cost quoted for two weeks is $3200 assuming we are a group of ten or more. This include air, hotel and ground transportation, and lots of bottle water.

$100 deposits must be forwarded to us by NLT 30 APR 07 to make your group reservation. You may then pay the balance in increments and final payment must be paid by Nov. 1st. respectively.

Please be sure you want to do this before you commit your funds. Once your reservation is done and you change your mind, the airlines will not refund. You will need Yellow Fever vaccination and a Visa. Please let me know any questions or concerns you may have.
